Ordinary Membership

Associate Membership

This category of membership has an affordable annual subscription and is aimed at microbiologists at stages in their career when extra support is useful.

  • Receive the Society's magazine Microbiology Today four times a year
  • Pay reduced registration charges to attend Society meetings
  • Can purchase Society printed publications at reduced prices
  • Receive notices of meetings and the address list of members

Associate Members have no rights to vote in Society elections or to stand for office.
Associate Membership is open to

  • Microbiologists resident in the UK or Republic of Ireland such as research assistants, graduate scientists, postdoctoral fellows, biomedical scientists, technicians and clinical scientists, whose annual salary is below a certain threshold
  • Postgraduate students worldwide who are registered for a higher degree in a microbiological subject
  • Members who are retired from full-time employment and have previously been SGM ordinary members

Undergraduate Membership

Undergraduate membership is open to students resident and registered for a first degree in the UK or Republic of Ireland.

School Corporate Membership

This is open to any primary, middle or secondary school or Sixth Form College in the UK or Ireland which is involved in teaching microbiology. The Society supports microbiology teaching by running INSET courses and providing a wide range of resources such as posters, practical investigations, factfiles and booklets. It runs occasional workshops and summer schools for post-16 biology teachers. SGM also hosts a dedicated education website www.microbiologyonline.org.uk and offers a free advice service to teachers. Corporate Membership

This enables companies or other organizations with an interest in microbiology to promote their products, services and activities to microbiologists. There are two subscription rates for membership, one (tier 1) for SMEs as defined by Companies House and another (tier 2) for larger companies.

  • Receive acknowledgement of their sponsorship at SGM meetings, in Microbiology Today and on the Society website
  • Have a link from the SGM website to their own website
  • Receive the Society's quarterly magazine Microbiology Today
  • 10% discount on advertisements and loose inserts in Microbiology Today
  • 10% discount on exhibitor fees and inserts at SGM meetings
